pimp my rice

Smoked salmon was pretty cheap today so this was dinner. There were some leftover avocado, kuri and Korean seaweed in the fridge so I just mixed in a bit of sushi vinegar with the rice and hora! Temaki sushi desu!

I'm watching my calorie intake so no mayo in the maki, just a bit on some kuri (Japanese cucumber).

Tako Pasta - タコパスター

The unforgiving summer heat inspired me to combine a basic peperoncino pasta with a marinade of octopus, cucumber, parsely in fresh lemon juice and sweet karashi miso for a cool and seemingly light dinner.



Yummy fresh octopus, I could not help but eat the tips of the tender tentacles as I slice away.



The cherry tomatoes were sprinkled with balsamic vinegar before it was added to the pasta. Fresh shredded basil leaves and a dash of crushed black pepper complete the summery taste. C asked me to do this again next week! よかったですね！

Nanaman?!

Japan was struck by a pretty strong earthquake at midnight, just after we finished watching, er, woke up to a dumb movie not worth mentioning here. C went back to sleep while we were still rolling and I turned on the TV; which was still on its perch, to check out the news.

Amazingly, I did not have to wait (usually 3 to 5 minutes after a quake) as the news flashed a map of Northern Japan with the varying quake magnitudes all laid out and tsunami warnings constantly updated! I was still feeling queasy since our building was still swaying - like motion sickness when I ride a car. It was M2 in Tokyo, quite weak unless you are several meters from ground level.

On the same note, that dodgy email about the triangle of life which has been around has come around again from a friend. All I can say is that when an earthquake strikes, make sure you turn off your stove and then run under a table and hope it's sturdy enough. You can't really do much. So last midnight during the quake, I just turned on the TV for the news.

This news has been around for a while, finally the Athens court has brought down their ruling.

As reported on the BBC website: "an Athens court ruled there was no justification for their contention that they felt slighted, saying the word did not define the islanders' identity."

Well, if the man who brought this case up, Dimitris Lambrou, files for an appeal and wins, sige inyo na yan. At least may Tagalog words tayo tulad ng, tibo, t-bird, magic, tivoli, byaning, tungril...

Totoong may Maputing Balyena

I was browsing at the FP website and came upon a newsbit: "A white whale has been spotted off the coast of Australia." As expected, Moby Dick comes to mind but this one is a humpback whale. Turns out that there's is actually a white whale in Australia named by Aborigines, "Migaloo" - meaning "white fella".

This newsbit was about a "new" white whale, probably the offspring of Migaloo the famous white whale of OZ. More Migaloo stuff poured out of Google, the photos and videos are amazing and so is a recording of this famous whale's singing!

Tomorrow at the supermarket, I will pass by the freezers carrying vacuum-sealed whale bacon.
